During the recent SINU (Italian Society of Human Nutrition) congress, held at the end of May, important news emerged regarding the food pyramid, which reflect the most up-to-date scientific evidence on nutrition and health. Here are the main updates:

Preference for vegetable proteins : it is recommended to prefer the consumption of vegetable proteins, such as legumes, for a healthier and more sustainable diet.
Recommended dressing : Extra virgin olive oil replaces olive oil in the pyramid, due to its superior content of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances.
Low-fat dairy every day : Skim milk and yogurt are now placed next to whole grains and nuts, suggesting daily consumption. Cheese, however, remains in the middle of the pyramid, with weekly consumption along with eggs.
Potatoes for daily to weekly consumption : their positioning changes, moving down to the central part of the pyramid, with a recommendation for consumption once a week.
Red meat and cured meats : these are placed at the top of the pyramid, reserved for occasional consumption only.
Sugar, salt and alcohol outside the pyramid : these foods are no longer represented in the pyramid structure. It is recommended to drastically limit their consumption, while for alcohol it is emphasized that there is no level of intake considered safe.
New base of the pyramid : in addition to food suggestions, the new pyramid incorporates elements related to lifestyle. At the base we now find hydration, protection of biodiversity, environmental sustainability, waste reduction, conviviality, physical activity and weight control.
The new food pyramid does not limit itself to providing nutritional information, but becomes a tool to promote and educate towards complete well-being, which takes into account both individual health and the environmental impact of daily food choices.
