The Green Menu: A Step Towards Sustainability

The introduction of an exclusively plant-based menu in Rome's school canteens is one of the most significant proposals to emerge from the Food Council, an organization that brings together different entities and proposes initiatives to improve the city's food systems. The project, officially presented to the public on July 17, 2023 in the document "The first proposals of the Food Council", was welcomed with enthusiasm by the Capitoline Council. In fact, the measure not only aims to promote sustainable and healthy eating, but is also part of the global objectives of the UN Agenda 2030, which call for the improvement of consumption and production models, contributing to the reduction of CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions.

The green menu, which will be served once a month, is not only a dietary change, but also an educational opportunity for boys, girls and their families. Teaching the value of a greener diet helps raise awareness among new generations about the impact of food choices on the environment and the health of the planet.

The Fundamental Role of Education in Food Policies

As highlighted by Terra!, an organization that has always been at the forefront of supporting sustainable food policies, discussing school menus is essential to rethink food systems in cities. Food education in schools is a crucial element to form widespread awareness of the choices that affect the environment, health and the future of our society. Involving young people in these reflections means investing in the future of the planet.
